Stage4

Urban Housing

Tradeston Site Visit

Throughout the visit in Tradeston there was a feeling of melancholy for the place.  A feeling of a once bustling place but now neglected and forgotten.  A place with rich heritage and strong principles that have been slowly wiped away through time.  A place that has been deteriorating through time. A place that was and has the potential to be lively and a hub for Glasgow.

Task 01 Reflection

Exploring the visual journeys of the Glasgow grid through task 01, a similar approach was taken then in Tradeston to explore visually  the small pocket of grid though its street fronts and the abscence of it, its edges, nodes and landmakrs. That triggered a hystorical research to understand how Tradeston used to work and look and what was the cause that it is now, with its layered use and gaps in it.

Housing Scheme

Reflection

Housing is an inherently intricate and multifaceted domain, influenced by countless interdependent considerations and factors. In this project, I sought to develop a blueprint for a reimagined tenement typology, aiming to create a contemporary architectural language that resonates with Glasgow’s historic tenements while addressing the unique challenges of its urban context.

A central objective was to design a framework capable of accommodating diverse groups of people, integrating them seamlessly into the same urban fabric. This vision recognizes the inherent complexity of modern lifestyles, including the need for adaptability over time. A key consideration was the ability to facilitate future modifications driven by evolving needs, whether these stem from demographic shifts, technological advancements, or changes in societal trends.

By emphasizing symmetry, repetition, and modularity in the design, I established a system that supports such adaptability. These elements provide a foundation for flexibility, enabling both anticipated and unforeseen transformations—such as repurposing spaces for commercial or workspace use. This future-proofing approach ensures that the design remains resilient and relevant in the face of changing demands.

Ultimately, this project bridges the past and present, drawing inspiration from the enduring legacy of Glasgow’s tenements while reinterpreting their structure for contemporary and future living. It aspires to create a dynamic and inclusive urban environment where the architecture evolves alongside the people it serves.
